In June of 2020, an outside developer came up with a Siri Shortcut that automatically turns on your iPhone’s video camera, mutes your phone and sends a text message with your location to an emergency contact if you get pulled over. Once you’ve installed it, all you have to say is “Siri, I’m getting pulled over,” and Siri will do the rest. Many people did reach out to me to ask if this was indeed legal.
The short answer is- yes. You have the right to videotape and audiotape police officers performing official duties in public. That means you can record an officer during a traffic stop, during an interrogation, or while they are making an arrest. The American Civil Liberties Union of Maryland believes such videos have helped bring to light issues that need attention. And Anne Arundel County Police Chief Tim Altomare has said officers should expect everything they do to be recorded — although he had words of caution for those who might pull out a cellphone at a confusing or poorly lit crime scene.
